Scope and Contents of the Materials

The 1969 addendum and later addenda to the American Missionary Association archives are mostly twentieth century in scope, covering two main subject areas. The first is the association's numerous schools. These are considered "field" records, or, the fruits of the Association's missionary work outside of its New York City office.  The Addendum is divided into three series: Series 1 covers field-related work, mainly the AMA schools; Series 2 covers projects that were run directly form the New York City headquarters, as well as documents both generated and collected by that office; Series 3 is oversized, bound financial ledgers from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Series 1 field records were arranged alphabetically by state and then by location.  The schools with records of considerable volume begin this series, occupying 201 boxes, or approximately 67 linear feet of shelf space.  They are followed by a group of "small field records," also arranged alphabetically by state occupying 17 boxes or approximately 6 linear feet of shelf space.  These records of field missions in the United States are then followed by records of the AMA's work in Puerto Rico, most of which focus on Ryder Hospital, in Humacau. These manuscripts occupy 19 boxes, or approximately 6 feet of shelf space.  The total number of containers for Series 1 comes to 237, covering 79 linear feet.  The records for each field location in Series 1 are described by specific scope notes and shelf lists.

Clearly, not all of the Association's five hundred schools are documented within the Addendum.  The records retained are not the ones maintained by the schools in the field, but rather the files maintained by the New York office of the AMA.  Typical records for each field school include correspondence, minutes, financial records, AMA publications about the given location, and photographs.  Other records, which vary from school to school, include the school's own administrative materials, such as employment applications and appointment contracts; student academic records, publications, and papers; manuscript histories of certain schools; and architectural blueprints.

The Series 2 records document the administrative actions of the AMA and the later United Church Board for Homeland Ministries and cover 92 linear feet of shelf space, or 230 boxes.  Most of this series is devoted to materials generated or collected by the General Secretary of the AMA, occupying 151 boxes, or, 60.4 linear feet of shelf space.  However, the rest of Series 2 is devoted to various portfolio endeavors of the General Secretary, work that was assigned to specific agents on a topic-by-topic basis.

The General Secretary material itself fills 151 boxes, covering 60.4 linear feet of shelf space.  These documents include collected items from a wide range of religious and secular groups. The largest such portfolio of topically assigned administrative work in Series 2 is the material documenting the AMA's work with Native Americans.  This work was directly overseen by the General Secretary and is therefore included in Series 2.  These records cover 26 boxes, or 10.0 linear feet of shelf space.

The second largest such portfolio of topically assigned administrative work in Series 2 is the Race Relations Department of the AMA, which had Drs. Charles Spurgeon Johnson and Herman H. Long as its directors.  These records cover 20 boxes, or 8.0 linear feet of shelf space.  Although the Department was mainly at Fisk University, in Nashville, Tennessee, it was still considered by the General Secretary as an extension of its New York office, so it is included in Series 2. The remaining portfolios, managed by John Moyer, under assignment of the General Secretary, include Coal Miners, Southern Woodcutters, Ministries in the Arts, Highlander Center, and Mexican Americans; these total 4 boxes, or 1.6 linear feet of shelf space.

The Series 3 records occupy twenty-seven oversized boxes, or a total of 28.0 linear feet of shelf space.  These records contain financial ledgers and cancelled checks of the AMA, 1859-1937. 1989 addendum includes video "I Remember the Amistad," produced by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries.

Biographical Note

The American Missionary Association was established in 1846 by a network of nineteenth century abolitionists who met at the Second Convention on Bible Missions.  Some of them had previously united in the legal defense of the Amistad captives in 1839. During the U.S. Civil War, the Association began founding schools for the freedmen and went on to found hundreds of schools for African Americans, as well as other minority groups and Appalachian Whites.

In 1839, 49 adult males and 4 children were taken to Cuba from what is now Sierra Leone as part of the international slave trade. During a voyage from Havana to another city, they took control of the merchant ship La Amistad and sailed up the eastern coast of the United States. Upon their landing in New York, they were put on trial.  In 1841, two years of court appeals pushed their case up to the U.S. Supreme Court, where they were declared free.

The settlement of the Amistad captives to Sierra Leone was administered by the  Amistad Committee, which operated the Mendi Mission. Later, the supervision of the mission was transferred to the Union Missionary Society. The resettlement and care of the Mendi Mission had at first been offered to the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, if that organization would adopt the principals of Christian abolitionism. The continued refusal of the American Board to adopt abolitionist principles led not only to the organization of the Union Missionary Society but also the Western Evangelical Missionary Society and the Committee for West Indians Missions. It was representatives of these three organizations, as well as other evangelical abolitionists, who came together at the convention of 1846, at which the American Missionary Association was founded. The American Missionary Association then absorbed the Union Missionary Society, the Western Evangelical Missionary Society, and the Committee for West Indian Missions.

Soon, the Association operated missions in Hawaii, Siam (Thailand), Egypt, for run-away American slaves in Canada and liberated slaves in Jamaica, for Chinese immigrants in California, and provided aid to abolitionist churches in the Northern states and territories, and in the border Southern states. As the antebellum era drew to a close, the American Missionary Association found itself contributing to individual teacher's salaries in Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky.  It was not as financially strong as other leading missionary groups of the day and it did not yet operate entire schools. The Civil War brought the opportunity to educate escaped "contrabands" even as the Union armies made inroads through the South, the American Missionary Association was nearby, setting up schools in local facilities which the military had previously confiscated.

By 1866, American Missionary Association officials realized that normal or grammar schools and colleges to train African American teachers would be the most effective use of their resources, and within three years they had chartered seven institutions for higher learning: Berea College, in Kentucky; Fisk University, in Tennessee; Atlanta University, in Georgia; Hampton Institute, in Virginia; Talladega College, in Alabama; Tougaloo University, in Mississippi; Straight University, now known as Dillard, in Louisiana.  The curriculums of these schools were modeled after the better Northern schools of the time, combining academic and industrial courses.

The American Missionary Association also aided in the establishment of Howard University and contributed the entire support for its theological department.  Fourteen non-chartered normal and high schools had been opened by 1876. By 1879, 150,000 pupils in the South were being taught by graduates of American Missionary Association normal schools and colleges.  And by 1888, the Association' schools had educated 7,000 teachers. In addition to training teachers, these schools had two other purposes.  They were to demonstrate conclusively that African Americans were capable of mastering higher education and they were to provide African American leaders who might assist their people in the struggle for equal rights.

The Association's primary concern was to provide a liberal Christian education among African Americans, even during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when public opinion ran strongly in favor of vocational training for the race.  However, the American Missionary Association did not lose sight of the African American community's need for economic independence. Consequently, manual labor departments enabled the students to pay for part of their educational costs. In the process, the schools often harvested their own food and raised their own livestock, and they sometimes built and maintained their physical stock of buildings as well.

Following Reconstruction, the American Missionary Association adopted the policy of divesting itself of its primary and secondary schools as rapidly as public authorities in an area could be brought to accept responsibility for African American education. This policy, which sprang from the Association's conviction that education is primarily a public responsibility, allowed for the increase in expenditures toward the improvement of its institutions of higher learning. In an effort to encourage the acceptance of public responsibility, the American Missionary Association frequently turned over its buildings and grounds to local school boards without receiving any financial compensation for the properties. The South, however, was slow to accept this responsibility and as late as 1946, the American Missionary Association was still supporting seven of the region's high schools and academies.

The American Missionary Association established the Race Relations Department at Fisk University, under the directorship of Dr. Charles S. Johnson, in 1942.  This met the needs of a climate that contained increased racial strife, both as a result of increased expectations for social participation by World War I veterans of color, and by the increased northern urban immigration by African Americans.  After the Second World War, the bi-racial staff of the Race Relations Department endeavored to bring about better human relations through social research, education, and community action.  The annual Race Relations Institute, held at Fisk, served as a training ground for many civil rights activists.

The Association's work with Native Americans was interrupted by the Civil War, but was resumed and expanded during the Reconstruction Period. The work with Asian Americans, white residents of Appalachia, and Puerto Ricans also received a significant portion of the American Missionary Association's attention.

In 1934, the Congregational and Christian Churches merged and the American Missionary Association, with Dr. Fred L. Brownlee as General Secretary, became part of the portfolio of the new organization, the Board for Homeland Ministries.  The Board had had its own non-American Missionary Association missions in higher education, the Division of Christian Education, headed by Bryant Drake since 1940.  Brownlee was succeeded in office by Rev. Philip M. Widenhouse, in 1954, and then by Wesley A. Hotchkiss, in 1957.

At this point, the American Missionary Association was absorbed again, into the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, and became a part of the Division of Higher Education and the American Missionary Association.  This organizational restructuring was the result of a further merger between the Congregation and Christian Churches, and the Evangelical and German Reformed Churches.  Other prominent officers in the campus ministry efforts of the Division were Hartland H. Helmich, Verlyn Barker, Rev. William K. Laurie, Rev. Paul H. Sherry, and Robert Mayo.  In addition, Herman H. Long and Rev. Galen Weaver headed the Association's projects concerning race relations; Joseph T. McMillan, Jr., managed college relationships; Robert Newman managed the American Missionary Association's concerns with church and culture; Rev. Yoshio Fukuyama and Rev. Paul H. Sherry tended to the General Secretary's planning and strategy; Dr. Clifton H. Johnson established and operated the Amistad Research Center, the official repository for the American Missionary Association's archives.

Wesley A. Hotchkiss continued to act as the American Missionary Association's General Secretary through this 1957 merger and beyond, and he retired in 1983.  At this point, Verlyn Barker succeeded Hotchkiss as Acting General Secretary and in 1984, Nanette Roberts assumed the official office and was succeeded in 1987 by Rev. Theodore H. Erickson, and in 1989 by co-General Secretaries, Rev. B. Ann Eichhorn and Rev. L. William Eichhorn.  Other officers in the office of the General Secretary were Rev. Boardman W. Kathan, Rev. James A. Smith, Jr., and Rev. Grant Spradling.

Even after the first absorption of the American Missionary Association, into the Board for Homeland Ministries, in 1934, the purpose of the American Missionary Association was maintained.  Truman B. Douglass, the Board for Homeland Ministries' Executive Vice President, cooperated with General Secretary Brownlee to maintain the education ministry. In 1963, the American Missionary Association's schools were transferred to the Council for Higher Education of the United Church of Christ.  Douglass' oversight was succeeded by Howard Spragg, the former Board for Homeland Ministries Treasurer, in 1968, and then by Shelby Rooks, in 1984.  In 1985, Division of Higher Education was eliminated and became the Division of Christian Education and the American Missionary Association.  And in 1987, the Association's financial endowment, which had been carried and maintained intact since 1846, was fully absorbed by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries.

The field records were arranged alphabetically by state and then by location.  The schools with records of considerable volume begin this series, followed by a group of "small field records," also arranged alphabetically by state. These records of field missions in the United States are then followed by records of the AMA's work in Puerto Rico, most of which focus on Ryder Hospital, in Humacau. Not all of the Association's five hundred schools are documented within the records.  The records retained are not the ones maintained by the schools in the field but rather, the files maintained by the New York office of the A.M.A.  Typical records for each field school include correspondence, minutes, financial records, AMA publications about the given location, and photographs.  Other records, which vary from school to school, include each school's own administrative materials, such as employment applications and appointment contracts; student academic records, publications, and papers; manuscript histories of certain schools; and architectural blueprints.
Sub-Series 1: Trinity School, 1897-1981, undatedAdd to your cart.

The Trinity School records concentrate in the years 1940 to 1950. Correspondence represents about forty-three percent of the total, dating from 1931-1957.  Most of it is between the New York office and two Trinity superintendents, Jay T. Wright (1940-1943) and the Reverend William King (1943-1956).  In 1956 and 1957 there is also correspondence to and from the Limestone County Superintendents of Education, F. R. Johnson and G.H. Roberts.

Financial records constitute most of the non-correspondence, filling almost two boxes.  In addition to financial records, reports, applications and contracts, minutes, photographs, publications and collected items, the non-correspondence includes records of Trinity's transfer to the state, examinations from the school year 1941-42 illustrating Wright's functional education methods, an interview with a local pastor concerning the 1946 race riot, and press clippings on the 1941 arrest of a Japanese friend of Wright.  There is also a 1946 photograph album called "Picture Story of Trinity School," the contents of which are filed with student material.  The oversize box contains its wooden cover.

The collection of Cotton Valley School records occupies four boxes, or 1.2 linear feet of shelf space.  Of this, one-quarter is devoted to correspondence, which mostly covers the decade of the 1940s. Included in the non-correspondence is an unpublished "Cotton Valley community survey," a demographic and anthropological study conducted in 1925 by noted sociologist E. Franklin Frazier.  Two later studies about the Cotton Valley community, conducted in 1941 and 1947, are also included, but these have no connection with Frazier.  A published study, Report of the Survey of the Macon County School System, from 1945, is also included. Financial records (1938-1957) account for approximately one-third of the collection.  Other administrative records include architectural drawings, employment applications and appointment contracts, photographs, and collected publications about the school.

Sub-Series 3: Lincoln School, 1887-circa 1980, undatedAdd to your cart.

The Lincoln School records concentrate in the years 1934 to 1957. Correspondence represents about one half of the total, dating from 1934-1956.  Letters of 1934 concern the employment of several teachers.  There is then a gap until 1937 when the principals' correspondence begins.  Most of the correspondence is between the New York office and school principals, W.A. Redfield (1937-1938), Wilfred Gamble (1938-1941), Ernest A. Smith (1943-1945), Ralph A. Martin (1945-1946), and Charles B. Fancher (1946-1950).  Other correspondence, dating from 1947 to 1950, is to or from Samuel C. Adams, director of the Cooperative Center.  Several letters in 1955 and 1956 are between the New York office and various non-AMA parties in relation to Lincoln, after it became a state school.

Non-correspondence includes reports, a student injury settlement, employment and financial records, records of alumni activities, materials on a chorus tour, photographs, a speech, architects' contracts, a speech, architects' contracts, publications, and material on community organizations.

Separated Materials: Video transfer of 8mm films, ca. 1950, color and black & white, featuring students and administrators (16:40) and "Where Once We Stood" - Documentary, 1989, narrated by Julian Bond (58:45)

The most numerous items of non-correspondence are records of the trustees, financial records, and copies of The Talladegan.  There are also many reports by the administration and faculty to the trustees, reports and minutes of faculty committees and the college council, reports and proposals on the curriculum, and studies of Talladega and other schools.  Also included are New York office reports from the AMA, employment applications and contracts, other college and student publications, photographs and collected items.  The photographs are mostly by Warren Marr, taken in 1964 and 1965.  The records also contain an original ink drawing by Gwendolyn Bennett that was used as an illustration for a 1932 student poetry anthology.

Sub-Series 5: Fessenden Academy, 1911-1964, undatedAdd to your cart.

The Fessenden Academy records span 37 boxes, or 13.2 linear feet of space.  Of this the correspondence is represented by only about .3 feet of linear shelf space.  Most of this correspondence with Fessenden is from the New York office of the AMA, individual teachers on summer vacation, and former students requesting transcripts of their academic records.  The correspondence is dominated by school principal John A. Buggs.

The financial records (1939-1951) are extensive.  Arranged chronologically, they cover six boxes of material. Most of the collection is devoted to the files of individual students, containing academic records, correspondence from students' families, and any transcript material from other schools.  Arranged alphabetically by student, these records fill eighteen storage boxes, and span about 6.8 linear feet of shelf space.  Ancillary to their individual student files are three storage boxes of student grades arranged chronologically by class; this represents 1.2 linear feet of shelf space.

The collection also documents the enrollment of World War Two veterans during the last eight years of Fessenden's operation.  Four storage boxes hold the files of individual veterans, arranged alphabetically, and this covers about 1.6 linear feet of shelf space.  One box each of photographs and publications can be found at the end of the collection.

Sub-Series 6: Dorchester Academy, 1880-1983Add to your cart.

Most of the Dorchester Academy records date from the period between 1946 and 1958. Correspondence represents about two thirds of the 1.2 linear feet. After correspondence regarding a phone line contract in 1928, correspondence begins in 1940 between the AMA's New York office and the last principal of Dorchester, J. Roosevelt Jenkins (1940-1941), the directors of the cooperative center, Claudius A. Turner (1943-1950), William A. Hill (1951), Percel O. Alston (1954-1955), and the Rev. Ernest E. Jupiter (1956-1958), and the intern directors, Frank Baker (1950, 1952-1954) and Lena M. Smith (1956). Smith also corresponded as treasurer of the credit union (1946-1949). From 1956 to 1958, the AMA office also corresponded with Rev. J. Stanley Taylor and Rev. V.W. Douglas, local pastors who helped Jupiter oversee the AMA's withdrawal from the cooperative center. Two other correspondents are Liberty County School Superintendent H.A. Bacon (1942-1947) and Carl Kemp, contractor for new buildings at Dorchester (1947-1949).

Non-correspondence includes AMA office reports, executive committee minutes, employment records, cooperative center activity and financial records, construction records, blueprints and architects' drawings, photographs, publications, and collected items. Three shoe boxes contain elementary and secondary school student attendance forms from the 1910s through the 1930s.

Sub-Series 7: Ballard Normal School, 1928-1983Add to your cart.

These records of Ballard Normal School take up approximately two linear feet of shelf space, including four Hollinger boxes, one shoe box and one oversized box. Correspondence occupies one of the Hollinger boxes (0.4 linear feet). The letters date from 1928 to 1983, but most are from 1979 and 1980. The principal correspondent is Raymond Pitts, a Ballard alumnus and Chairperson of the Grand Reunion Committee (1979-80). Other correspondents include Fred Bell and Albert Howard, both alumni, and Raymond Von Tobel, the school's principal from 1911 to 1935.

Non-correspondence occupies the three remaining Hollinger boxes (1.2 linear feet) and falls within four categories: AMA records, school records, student records, and reunion records. The types of materials include: publications, records of achievements of students, press clippings, and other collected items.  Of special interest is a notebook enclosed with the correspondence of Fannie Simms (Box 78, Folder 3), which she used in her eleventh grade English Composition class. A letter dated February 10, 1980 from television host Phil Donahue includes a certificate signed by him.

Related material can be found in the Raymond J. Pitts papers and the Raymond Von Tobel papers.

Sub-Series 10: Dillard University, circa 1882-1983, undatedAdd to your cart.

Non-correspondence formats dominate the records of Dillard University, which in their entirety cover approximately 5.2 linear feet. Most of the correspondence, comprising 1.2 linear feet, involves the personnel of the AMA's New York headquarters. As both Straight and Dillard became involved with the U.S. General Education Board (1928-1941) and several charitable foundations, these agencies are represented, along with the Orleans Parish School Board (1940-1941) and the Chicago Theological Seminary (1953-1954).

Correspondence also includes information concerning the controversy regarding the appointment of Albert W. Dent as university president (1941) and the success attained for the university by the Dillard Choir (1951-1952). Financial records originally included as part of correspondence have been removed and filed separately, with such removals noted in the correspondence files. However, there is much requisition information, beginning in 1928, which has been retained with the correspondence. Researchers seeking financial information should not overlook this component of the correspondence.

The non-correspondence consists almost entirely of publications, which includes university publications such as the Dillard Bulletin of course offerings (1940-1977), the Calendar of Events (1971-1980), Dillard Dialogue (1967-1974), Campus Capsules (1971-1976), Dillard Capsules (1976-1981), and student publications such as the student newspaper Courtbuillon (1941-1980) and the yearbook Le Diable Bleu (1955-1975). Other, more limited, publications are of special value, including event pamphlets from Straight University at the turn of the century, a copy of The Straight Gleaner (1925) and a student publication, Black Liberator (1970).

Photographs of Straight University, Dillard University, and Flint-Goodridge Hospital are also included. The history of the hospital is also richly detailed in these records with correspondence, financial records, and many commemorative events held to honor the facility.

The Lincoln Academy records concentrate on the years 1932 to 1956. Correspondence represents about one third of the total. Most of it is between the AMA's New York office and school directors Curtis McDowell (1938-1944) and Edgar D. Wilson (1944-1956). Another correspondent is Hunter Huss, Superintendent of Gaston County Board of Educations, during Lincoln's transferral to the state between 1943 and 1955. Sub-Series 14: Avery Normal Institute, 1882-1982Add to your cart.
Materials other than correspondence dominate the records of Avery Normal Institute, which in their entirety cover 1.6 linear feet. Much of this non-correspondence is represented by employment applications and appointment contracts for staff, and by school financial records, which span the years 1940 through 1946.  The correspondence covers 0.6 linear feet. Besides routine exchanges with the AMA's New York headquarters, this material contains faculty contract negotiations and inquiries relating to the transfer of the school from private to public control. Much of the World War II correspondence focuses on the era's social turmoil and how it affected staff. Most of the correspondence was initiated by Avery's directors: Frank A. DeCosta (1938-1941), L. Howard Bennett (1941-1944), Florence A. Clyde (interim director, 1944-1945), and John F. Potts (1945-1954).

Sub-Series 16: Fisk University, 1869-1983, undatedAdd to your cart.

The Fisk University records total twelve boxes, or 4.8 linear feet, of which 1.2 is correspondence.  Of special note in the correspondence are the three letter books, spanning the years 1869-1874. Together these three volumes hold approximately 1,300 letters. The remaining correspondence covers the years 1893-1954, and is more varied in authorship and addressee; it includes approximately 1,100 letters. Besides the emphasis on prominent personnel of the AMA, correspondence of university officials is well represented by the following: Erastus Milo Cravath, AMA Field Secretary and President of Fisk (1869-1873); Charles Spurgeon Johnson, Director of the Social Science Department and President (1941-1956); Thomas E. Jones, President of Fisk and Secretary for Civilian Public Service of the American Friends Service Committee (1940-1945); Henrietta Matson, professor (1872-1876); N. D. Smith, cashier of the Memphis Branch of the Freedman's Savings and Trust Company (1870-1873); Adam K. Spense, dean (1871-1872); Thomas C. Steward, Supervisor of Buildings at Fisk (1872-1874); George L. White, Fisk Treasurer and organizer of the Fisk Jubilee Singers (1869-1871); L. Hollingsworth Wood, Vice-Chairman of the Fisk Trustees (1940-1951).

Less represented in the correspondence are the following individuals: W.E. B. DuBois, writer and speaker on race relations, 1941; William J. Faulkner, Dean of the Fisk Chapel, 1943-1945; Lee Lorch, Chairman of the Fisk Mathematics Department, 1954-1955; and John D. Rockefeller Jr, philanthropist, 1941. Non-correspondence comprises nine boxes. Of this, much is collected publications of both the university and its students. Major university publications include the university catalogue (1882-1890); Fisk University News (1921-1923); Fisk News (1927-1972), various bulletins of course offerings (1942-1971) and the University Newsletter (1966-1970). Of considerable weight in this collection is the student press, represented by the Fisk Forum (1948-1970), the Fisk Herald (1953, 1965), the Student News (1934, 1939), and the Oval, the student yearbook (1946-1958).

Material on the Civil Rights Movement includes a workshop agenda from 1960, an itinerary of protest demonstrations throughout the South (early 1960s), and materials relating to a student campus protest (1969). Special note should be taken of the file on the Fisk Jubilee Singers, which contains press clippings and promotional material (1911-1981).

The records of Pleasant Hill Academy and Community Center total nine boxes or 3.6 linear feet. The correspondence is housed in four boxes. Since the Academy became a community center in 1948, the nature of the correspondence changed at this time, reflecting the non-academic nature of the latter institution. Communications of the various administrators include those by school principals W. H. Trainum (1922), Victor Obenhaus (1940-1944), and Walter Mueller (1945-1948). The community center directors are also represented by William A. Boyce (1947-1954) and Dr. Paul Reynolds (1954-1958). Other correspondents include Viola W. Rainey, also known as Mrs. V.W.R. Cunningham (1947-1957); Kenneth L. Helm, principal of the county-operated school (1948-1950); the Ohio Women's Home Missionary Union (1935-1942); and the Uplands Cumberland Mountain Sanatorium (1950-1957).

Financial records, including those for the academy and the community center, comprise the second largest portion of the Pleasant Hill records, accounting for one linear foot. Employment applications and appointment contracts are also present in the records.

Sub-Series 18: Huston-Tillotson College, 1881-1989, undatedAdd to your cart.

The records of Huston-Tillotson College are mostly devoted to documents of Tillotson College, due to the fact that Sam Huston College was run by the Methodist Church, not by the American Missionary Association. These holdings comprise eight boxes, or 2.4 linear feet. Of this, correspondence accounts for two boxes. Aside from correspondence from the AMA's New York office, major correspondents include: Mary E. Branch, President of Tillotson College (1938-1944); Arthur L. Royster, Secretary-Treasurer of Tillotson, and later Huston-Tillotson (1938-1952); William H. Jones, President of Tillotson College (1944-1952); Matthew S. Davage, Secretary of the Department of Higher Education for Negroes, Board of Education of the Methodist Church, and later President of Huston-Tillotson College (1947-1955); J. Harris Purks, Associate Director of the General Eduation Board, New York (1947-1952); Phillip Sarles, Congregational Church of Rogers Park in Chicago, and Trustee of Tillotson College (1949-1951); Minister William C. Burton, First Congregational Church in Fort Worth, Texas (1951-1952); Rev. Fred E. Cole, Development Officer of Tillotson College (1949); John O. Cross, Executive Secretary, General Board of Education (1952-1954); and John J. Seabrook, President of Huston-Tillotson College (1955-1958).

The non-correspondence records comprise four boxes, or 1.6 linear feet. While documents exist to record student activities, most of the administration-generated records deal with financial concerns and analysis of and preparation for the 1952 merger of Sam Huston College and Tillotson College.

Sub-Series 19: Small Field Records, 1858-1987, undatedAdd to your cart.

The American Missionary Association's work was not limited to the construction and operation of African American schools in the American South. The AMA's concern was world-wide, as is evident in the Small Field Records. Arranged on a state-by-state basis, with records for foreign operations at the end, these records show the breadth of the Association's social involvement. The records occupy seventeen boxes, or 6.3 linear feet of shelf space. Documents vary by type from state to state, but generally include correspondence, financial records, publications, and photographs.

Among the highlights of these records are approximately 0.3 linear feet of photographs of Native Americans from the New Mexico files (1901-1931, undated; several folders of photographs, also of Native Americans, from the South Dakota files (1900-1932, undated); and records of the Charles Avery Trust from the South Carolina files.

Sub-Series 20: Puerto Rico Director's Office, circa late 1800s-1965, undatedAdd to your cart.

Correspondence represents about sixty percent of the Director's Office records, dating from 1931 to 1956. Prior to 1944, it concerned Puerto Rican work as a whole. Most of this is between AMA treasurer William T. Boult and Abram W. Sparks and William Belcher, treasurers for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), concerning ABCFM funding for AMA work in Puerto Rico. Almost all the rest is between the AMA office in New York and the general directors, Rev. C.I. Mohler and Howard Spragg, and the assistant director, Joseph Bevilacqua.

The non-correspondence consists of reports, notes, minutes, employment records, and financial records, dating mainly from 1944 to 1956, and a large collection of photographs and postcards. A book, Thirty Years in Porto Rico (San Juan, 1927), by Arthur James was removed from the collection and catalogued separately.

Historical Note: The AMA came to Puerto Rico in 1899 after the Spanish-American War and began various types of missionary work, including churches, schools, and Ryder Hospital. These establishments were run separately until World War II, when the AMA saw the need for single leadership in Puerto Rico and appointed the Reverend C.I. Mohler as General Director in 1944. Mohler had earlier been appointed the superintendent of Congregational Churches in Puerto Rico in 1926. Mohler continued in this role after the Christian and Congregational Churches united in 1928. He was also elected executive secretary of the United Evangelical Church of Puerto Rico in 1931 and served until his retirement in 1949.

Beginning in 1946, a coordinating committee consisting of the heads of each institution began contributing to the decision-making for all Puerto Rican work. Following Mohler's retirement, Howard Spragg replaced him as General Director. He continued to serve that role even after moving to the AMA's New York office in 1952. However, the coordinating committee took over most of his responsibility. An assistant to the general director, Joseph Bevilacqua, was appointed in 1952 to serve primarily as a counselor to the churches.

Sub-Series 21: Ryder Memorial Hospital, circa 1900-1989, undatedAdd to your cart.
Correspondence represents about forty percent of the Ryder Memorial Hospital records, dating from 1933 to 1957. Most of it is between the AMA's New York office and the medical directors, Ralph Mugrage (1934-1944), H.M. Gonzalez (1944-1947), and John A. Smith (1947-1956), and their secretaries, Luz Fuentes (1938-1948) and Gloria Castro (1948-1956).  Most of the non-correspondence consists of financial and statistical records, while also including notes, votes, memoranda, reports, employment applications and contracts, by-laws, coordinating committee minutes, and photographs, publications, and collected items. The photographs include eleven folders of images by Warren Marr.

Historical Note: Dr. Charles Ryder came to Puerto Rico in the 1910s as a field superintendent for the AMA and raised funds for a "Congregational hospital" that later became Ryder. In 1914, Maximillian Schurter, a Presbyterian doctor, began working for the AMA as a traveling physician. He began providing services at the hospital although it was not yet finished. The hospital was renamed Ryder Hospital and officially opened in 1918. Dr. Schurter assumed the directorship at that time. He retired in 1920, at which time the AMA appointed Dr. Ray Wycoff as director.

In 1923, Wycoff was replaced by Dr. James Watson and a training school for nursed was opened. In 1933, Dr. Edward Hume, hired by the AMA to survey Ryder in preparation for accreditation, suggested professional improvements including the resignation of Watson and further training for his assistants. The hospital gradually expanded, especially during the directorship of Dr. Ralph Mugrage, which began in 1935. The nurses training school closed the following year. In 1944, Mugrage left for war service, and Rev. C.I. Mohler became general director of all Puerto Rico work and assumed responsibility for Ryder. Dr. H.M. Gonzalaz, a native Puerto Rican, became medical director. He resigned in 1947 and was replaced by Dr. John A. Smith.

A board of directors was formed in 1956.  In the late 1950s, Ryder Hospital began performing sterilization operations to improve the lives of the poor, which although legal, were highly controversial on the predominantly Catholic island. These operations were one reason that Ryder failed to receive accreditation at the time. The hospital was again denied accreditation in 1961 due to its autopsy rate. Ryder continued to improve its service and finally received accreditation in 1963. In 1968, the AMA turned over all legal connections to Ryder Hospital to the control of its local board of trustees.

Sub-Series 22: Puerto Rico, Other, circa 1900-1981, undatedAdd to your cart.

The correspondence of the various Puerto Rican work in this sub-series is interfiled and represents one-half of the sub-series. After one postcard from 1917, the correspondence dates from 1937 to 1981. Major correspondents include Rev. C.I. Mohler, superintendent of AMA churches and executive secretary of the United Evangelical Church before becoming general director of AMA work on the island.; J. Walsh Stull, principal of Blanche Kellogg Institute; Uly Tremblay, Orm Green, and Ivan Chatham, officials at Yuquiyu; Revs. Hugh J. Williams and Aaron F. Webber, presidents of the Evangelical Seminary; its dean, Dr. Florencio Saez; and Revs. Cruz A. Suarez and Santiago S. Alvarados of the Naguabo and Ponce churches.

The non-correspondence is arranged according to the institution to which it belongs. It includes reports, employment records, minutes, financial records and publications, photographs (several taken in 1965 by Warren Marr), and collected items. Coordinating committee records have been duplicated when necessary to be included with each institution concerned. Most of the United Evangelical Church records are in Spanish.

Historical Note: The other types of work of the AMA in Puerto Rico consisted of the Blanche Kellogg Institute, a girls' high school; various churches; a rural life center called Yuquiyu; involvement in the interdenominational Evangelical Seminary in Rio Piedras; the United Evangelical Church of Puerto Rico; and other interdenominational work.

Blanche Kellogg Institute, Santurce - Opened as a primary school in 1907, the Blanche Kellogg Institute became a high school in 1916 when enough public primary schools opened Puerto Rico. When the Institute faced severe financial difficulties during World War II, the AMA decided to close it and divert the funds to other projects.

Church Work - When Protestant denominations began establishing churches in Puerto Rico at the beginning of the 20th century, they agreed to divide the island regionally among themselves, assigning each district to one denomination. The Christian Church began establishments in Ponce and the Congregational Church in Humacao; when these two churches combined, the AMA took on the church work on both regions beginning in 1928. The Reverend C.I. Mohler had become superintendent of Congregational churches in Puerto Rico in 1926, and he retained his position over all AMA churches on the island after the merger.

By 1931, there were eighteen AMA churches in Puerto Rico with 1,779 members. The AMA churches were about one third self-supporting by 1940, and the AMA attempted to make them completely so. By 1948, there were twenty-three AMA churches with 3,145 members. The largest church buildings were established in the towns of Humacao, Naguabo, and Fajardo in the district of Humacao, and in Ponce, Santa Isabel, and Salinas in the district of Ponce

Yuquiyu Rural Life Center, Luquillo - A New Deal agency, the Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration (PRRA), purchased land in the eastern district of Luquillo and around 1939 started a project called Zalduondo with housing, a community center, and medical care for residents. In 1942, the PRRA abandoned the project and the following year, the Church of Brethren, Mennonites and Society of Friends convinced the government to continue the project to provide work for Conscientious Objectors, who worked there during World War II The AMA bought Zalduondo land in 1946 with money from the sale of the Blanche Kellogg Institute. The officials of the other Puerto Rican institutions and General Director C.I. Mohler formed a coordinating committee with Chatham and Greene to administer the project, which was renamed Yuquiyu.

Evangelical Seminary, Rio Piedras - The Evangelical Seminary began in 1919 as a training school for local ministers in a cooperative effort of several Protestant denominations, including Methodists, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Baptists, United Brethren, the United Christian Missionary Society, the Christian Church, and the AMA. A board of directors on the island and a board of trustees in the States directed the seminary. The AMA was represented on the board by Fred L. Brownlee and the Rev. C.I. Mohler, who also served on the board of directors. The first president of the Seminary was Rev. James A. McAllister. Rev. Hugh J. Williams became president in 1942, followed by Rev. Aaron F. Webber in 1947. Dr. Florecio Saez, Dean of the Seminary joined the coordinating council in 1947.

United Evangelical Church and other interdenominational work - The Congregational, Christian, and United Brethren Churches formed the United Evangelical Church (UEC) in Puerto Rico in 1931, after previous attempts to unify the island’s Protestant denominations had failed. The Federation of Evangelical Churches of Puerto Rico had been formed in 1905, and the Evangelical Union was formed in 1916. However, neither unification lasted very long. C.I. Mohler was elected executive secretary of the UEC when it was formed, and was re-elected every three years until his retirement in 1949. The three churches hoped that others would join, but none had by 1950. The UEC allotted funds and made proposals for individual churches, but left their administration to each denomination. The AMA was also involved on several occasions in other types of interdenominational work on the island, or merely collected some materials about them.
